The Politics of the Kingdom of God

It's called the, "Kingdom of God" for a good reason. The word Kingdom means a political realm or territory under the control of a King. Jesus knew exactly what he was doing when he called it a Kingdom. He was setting Himself up against Caesar, who was the most powerful King in all of the world. Jesus took a hard stand. He called people away from one government to another. Away from one King, in order to follow the REAL King.

Sounds like preacher language I know. Sorry about that.

So why have people who claim to have taken on citizenship in Jesus' Kingdom begun to care so much about the the politics of the country they live in? Jesus made it clear that he stood in opposition to all other Kingdoms. So why then would we expect for other Kingdoms to follow the way of Jesus.

Why would we try to get laws passed to hold others to the standards of our King?

Why do we protest each time our values are not represented by our country? Come on, you don't really think this is a "Christian Nation" do you? Lets get real. To be a Christian is to follow Jesus. Can a nation follow Jesus? Besides that, about 12% of Americans are currently a part of any local church.

We should fully expect that the values of Jesus' Kingdom would not be followed by our nation. We must learn to accept that. Move on. I don't care if its Gay marriage, or abortion, or anything else. We cannot expect our government to follow Jesus. And when we do, and we protest and shout and eat fried chicken sandwiches and post angry meme's on Facebook we remind America why they left the church long ago.

So chill out. Expect America to make decisions you don't agree with and move on. Do what Jesus did. Love the God with everything you have. And love your neighbor as yourself.

It might help understanding if you speak in political terms. As much as we want to believe, christianity is a minority and will be until Christ comes again. Look at how fellow christians live in other countries which have a lot less democracy than we do. Although politians court our vote we won't gain anything unless we buy it or bribe for it.

I'd agree that although many see their political goal as "re-building the Christian nation", some have deeper motives.

Their argument (if I can articulate it well) is two-fold.

First, the slippery-slope and substitution theories. If homosexuality is sinful (which I think is the primary issue here), then by accepting sin at a cultural level, we are putting people in hell who might not have gone there 50 years ago (because they were less exposed to homosexuality and/or believed it was a disorder).

For Christians who believe that God has some leeway with sin-I-didn't-know-was-sin, this isn't as big of an issue. (If everyone around you believes something is okay, then God won't punish you for doing something you never knew was wrong.) I first heard this articulated in C.S. Lewis's The Final Battle, when an enemy soldier did the right thing but worshiped the wrong god.

It's less about country, and more about salvation. Those who strongly believe in hell are more likely to want others to avoid it, even by mistake. Hence, a "moral society" is not just better right now, but also for the afterlife. (This reasoning also assumes, possibly, that non-Christians can get into heaven as long as they were somewhat good. A sharp logician will see the error here--either everything is important, or anything is forgivable given the right circumstances.)

Second, silence is tacit acceptance (hence the vocal outcry). The second point goes both ways--if I don't speak up, I'm letting the other person win without a fight, and that's morally objectionable. So one side changes their profile pic, and one side posts anti-gay-marriage comments.

I think the only people who should be politically charged are the ones who are truly motivated by some salvation-for-others factor. I'd also hope that these people are as sincere in other areas of morality, including learning to speak the truth in love (as they understand that truth). If you can't do it all, then you should stop using this issue as a punching bag, for all the reasons Jordan mentioned above (and plenty of others).

Thanks Chris. I think you're assessment is probably fairly accurate. Although, most of the people I see are the same ones that are up in arms about the economy and their distaste for President Obama, foreign policy, war policy, etc... So that leads me to think for most people its more about Right Wing politics that they put under the banner of "God's way."

For those with "higher motives" about salvation, thats fine, but I must say, its a terrible way to try to help others "come to salvation."
